World Con Montreal Update

I paid my membership to the Montreal World Con. I will reserve my hotel room at a latter date. Thinking about getting a suite because I want to do a party room. Called it the Cosmic Lounge and have karaoke with food and drink.

The Orion Conflict

I have been working a SciFi RPG setting for Savage Worlds. One of the problems I have is with the warp drive. The SciFi Companion has it as same system, same galaxy, and different galaxy. My scope is much smaller using just a section of the milky way galaxy. Also there are 3 different warp drives calls warp-1, warp-2, and warp-3. The number is a warp factor with how many light years you can get travel in a week. Well I am going to work on it and have something that will work for my setting.

Why I love sci-fi

If you have read my past posts, I love science fiction. I was in a hotel lobby in Minneapolis the Friday morning before a con called Marscon. One of the hotel workers came up to me and ask what I like about sci-fi. I gave him two answers. First answer is that they create imaginative worlds and the second is you can talk about serious subjects (i.e. racism, imperialism, colonialism, etc) that you couldn’t tell in a modern setting.

Building the Dream

Two men share a dream.
To escape the air stream.
Together they start to build.
Gathering parts to be milled.

With a screwdriver, hammer, and wrench.
Building each part on the bench.
On to the carts to be wheeled.
Strung along the field.

Looking over their notes.
They assemble it with screws and bolts.
Connecting it all to the hull.
With each problem rolling around in their skulls.

Fusion reactor and Ion engines are in.
Then they attach the fins.
Wiring the controls in the cockpit.
They make everything fit.

Once a pile of junk.
Now something to get them out of their funk.
Seeing before their eyes.
The craft that will reach beyond the skies.

Strapped in their seats.
A new adventure they will meet.
When they started people would scoff.
But now it’s the countdown to blastoff.

Higher and higher they go.
Leaving behind them their woes.
Everything feels right.
Forward into the eternal night.

Cosmic Lounge at Montreal World Con

I have been doing party room at Sci-Fi conventions for a few years now. I would have karaoke with non-alcoholic drinks and snacks. I don’t have alcohol because I can’t check IDs and run karaoke at the same time. I am planning getting a suite for the party room at Montreal World Con in 2027.

Sci-fi flags

One of my interests is heraldry and vexillology (the study of flags).  Also as a sci-fi and RPG fan, I thought I show you a few flags that I made for a setting I am working on.

First is the Terran Confederation.

This represents the main human empire in the galaxy with its capital world of Earth.  The midnight blue background is to represent outer space with the yellow sun to be the Sun and the blue circle cross is an astrological system of Earth the home of the human race.  I have thought about olive branches in yellow around it or other objects.  Or just to change it have 4 pointed stars around it to represent the planets in the confederation.

Second is the Compact of New Zion.

This is a splinter group of humanity started by ultra-conservative Christians.  The background is black to represent space with a white and yellow cross over it.  The white is the purity of their faith and the yellow is the light of God over the darkness.  I was also thinking of adding some other Christian imagery, but it would make it too complicated.

The third is the Republic of New Texas.

This one was just a fun what if people from Texas set up an independent Texas on another planet.  So I took the Flag of Texas and change it to have 3 stripes(red, white, red) instead of 2(white, red).

I plan on having more like an Islamic splinter, some political factions, and alien flags.

Geek Code is obsolete?

Back in the 90’s when the Internet was the playground for nerds in college they created the Geek Code to show off our geekiness.  It increadiblely out of date especially with DOOM!, Star Trek, Babylon 5, Usenet, Kibo, and Dilbert.  It really needs to be updated.  USENET can be replaced with Reddit and Dilbert can be changed with web comics.  That should be updated for the times.  Well below is my geek code.  Click here to decode.

Sad Puppies aren’t Much Fun

SAD PUPPIES

parody of Dead Puppies by Ogden Edsl

Sad puppies, sad puppies
Sad puppies aren’t much fun

They want to say mean things
They want all the bling
Sad puppies aren’t much fun

Those puppy cried late twenty-fourteen
They keep making an awful scene
Sad puppies aren’t much fun, no, no, no

They says puppy’s days are through
They say they’re going to lose
Sad puppies aren’t much fun

Sad puppies, sad, sad, sad, sad puppies
Sad puppies aren’t much fun
Come on everybody out there, sing along, okay

Sad, sad, sad, sad puppies
Sad, sad, sad, sad, sad, sad, sad puppies
Sad puppies aren’t much fun

One more time for rolling resca
Sad, sad, sad, sad, sad, sad, sad puppies
Sad puppies aren’t much fun

Dog Catchers

Lately if you’re a sci-fi/fantasy fan you might of heard about the Sad or Rabid Puppies.  They are a campaign to get books from white male authors nominated for a Hugo and try to flood the slate of categories to once of there approval.  The system is easy to game for that of all it’s over 10000 members at WorldCon only a small portion of them submit ballots for nomination.  This has many of the same vain as Gamergate.  It seems like the right wing hate machine is getting it tentacles into everything that is changing to be more diverse.

So how we going to change this you ask?  Do the same that the occupy movement and the Bernie Sanders presidential campaign.  We need to get the rest of the WorldCon goes to nominate books that are not supported by the sad puppies.  To strengthen are resolve like the Occupy Wall St movement.  Pressure authors and artists to no accept the nomination if they are on the sad puppies list.  Same goes for publishers also.  TO BE DOG CATCHERS.
