Problem with home labbing

I have a Docker box with Portainer where you can have containers running different apps. And that is the problem. What do I put on. Pi-Hole was a fail. But what do I put on it: Immich, Jellyfin, Bitwarden or something that runs video game roms? When I first decided to this I was worried that I would be in this predicament. I have a NAS box for years and it works great storing my videos, music, pictures, documents and software. Plus do I want to give it access to the outside with a VPN or reverse proxy. I will keep at it and hope to find some that satisfy my needs.

The Orion Conflict

I have been working a SciFi RPG setting for Savage Worlds. One of the problems I have is with the warp drive. The SciFi Companion has it as same system, same galaxy, and different galaxy. My scope is much smaller using just a section of the milky way galaxy. Also there are 3 different warp drives calls warp-1, warp-2, and warp-3. The number is a warp factor with how many light years you can get travel in a week. Well I am going to work on it and have something that will work for my setting.

Docker and Portainer – Home Labbing part 5

I am making progress on my Docker box. I was struggling with the Command Line Interface trying to get containers created and running. I wanted to have a Graphical User Interface and I found an app provides that and makes it much easier with Portainer.

I want to add more apps and I may want to have it be accessible to the outside that is safe. I have been looking into some ideas like Tailscale or a reverse proxy through a service like CloudFlare. I will keep you posted of my progress.

Why I love sci-fi

If you have read my past posts, I love science fiction. I was in a hotel lobby in Minneapolis the Friday morning before a con called Marscon. One of the hotel workers came up to me and ask what I like about sci-fi. I gave him two answers. First answer is that they create imaginative worlds and the second is you can talk about serious subjects (i.e. racism, imperialism, colonialism, etc) that you couldn’t tell in a modern setting.

My Rack (Home Lab part 3)

Bought a metal wire shelf so I can put my PCs for my home labbing project.

My Home Lab Setup

With my NAS box I added a Docker box and looking to gets some apps running on it.

Home Labbing

I work in IT and was looking on doing home labbing. Home labbing is a way to build your own server with VMs or Docker containers to run OS or Apps. I have started years ago making my own NAS box with OpenMediaVault. I use it to store my media files like my ripped CDs, DVDs, and Blu-Rays as well as my documents, music, pictures and software. I want to expand to other services like a PiHole or home automation.

Building the Dream

Two men share a dream.
To escape the air stream.
Together they start to build.
Gathering parts to be milled.

With a screwdriver, hammer, and wrench.
Building each part on the bench.
On to the carts to be wheeled.
Strung along the field.

Looking over their notes.
They assemble it with screws and bolts.
Connecting it all to the hull.
With each problem rolling around in their skulls.

Fusion reactor and Ion engines are in.
Then they attach the fins.
Wiring the controls in the cockpit.
They make everything fit.

Once a pile of junk.
Now something to get them out of their funk.
Seeing before their eyes.
The craft that will reach beyond the skies.

Strapped in their seats.
A new adventure they will meet.
When they started people would scoff.
But now it’s the countdown to blastoff.

Higher and higher they go.
Leaving behind them their woes.
Everything feels right.
Forward into the eternal night.

Geek Code is obsolete?

Back in the 90’s when the Internet was the playground for nerds in college they created the Geek Code to show off our geekiness.  It increadiblely out of date especially with DOOM!, Star Trek, Babylon 5, Usenet, Kibo, and Dilbert.  It really needs to be updated.  USENET can be replaced with Reddit and Dilbert can be changed with web comics.  That should be updated for the times.  Well below is my geek code.  Click here to decode.
